PSI-Kenya seeks a Deputy Director of Research & Metrics to be part of the senior management team based in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Deputy Director will strengthen the capacity of PSI-Kenya marketing and programme staff to interpret and utilize the results of quantitative and qualitative research for purposes of evidence-based decision making. The Deputy Director will strengthen and broaden the capacity of a local research agency to implement all PSI-Kenya research activities, while maintaining sole responsibility for the design of the research according to PSI methodologies and, ultimately the quality of the research products.
The Deputy Director will report to the PSI-Kenya Country Representative.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the PSI-Kenya research department, including the M&E unit;
  • Develop all study designs according to established PSI methodologies;
  • Support programme and marketing staff to identify research needed to design, monitor and evaluate PSI-Kenya’s social marketing programme;
  • Support PSI-Kenya’s marketing and communication staff to build their skills in interpreting research results and using a research-to-action approach to guide programmatic decisions and activities;
  • Strengthen the capacity of and transfer skills to the implementing agency research team to independently implement, manage, and improve PSI-Kenya research activities;
  • Manage research agency staff implementing PSI-Kenya research activities;
  • Provide technical assistance to the implementing agency in areas of quantitative research design, sampling strategy, data analysis, and dissemination of results to internal and external stakeholders;
  • Provide technical assistance to the implementing agency research staff in the design of qualitative studies, including the development of communication concepts and pretest of communication strategies, as needed;
  • Identify and manage appropriate training opportunities in the areas of mapping, behavioral tracking and impact measurement of communication campaigns and qualitative research;
  • Write reports appropriate for external dissemination and publication.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Masters degree, or higher, with experience in public health, behavioral sciences, population studies, psychology, communication, marketing, or a related field plus 7-10 years relevant work experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to build research capacity of staff of varied levels of experience;
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent studies;
  • Experience in the design, management, analysis, interpretation, and dissemination of behavioral research in public health;
  • Experience in the implementation of quantitative and qualitative methods;
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis of health survey data and multi-variate analysis skills preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to inform programmatic decisions using research and routine monitoring data.
  • The successful candidate will have excellent ability to train, manage and develop research staff; proficiency in SPSS and/or STATA; strong writing skills; the ability to work closely with marketing and programme staff to deliver actionable and insightful research outputs; and excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of public health issues, particularly condom social marketing, HIV communications, family planning, safe water, and malaria; and familiarity with the international donor community.
